Hand stripping is a traditional grooming technique used on many wiry/harsh coated breeds, some gun dogs & hounds, that ensures the integrity of the dogs coat is maintained in terms of colour, texture & fit for purpose.

All hand stripped breeds were bred initially for working, for example retrieving game in the field or guarding premises in cold, wet weather. Therefore their coats have developed over time to enable them to do their jobs most effectively, in terms of repelling dirt and water, deflecting thorns & debris etc.

However it should be noted that not all breeds that 'can' be stripped, 'should' be stripped, for a variety of reasons, such as the dog may not tolerate it, the coat is too soft to be stripped, the dog has a lack of undercoat, the coat has been previously clipped, the dog has been neutered/spayed. It is therefore essential if you are considering having your dog hand stripped, that you contact us to arrange a consultation in advance of any appointment.
